29 Post-Primary Schools could close

More than half of the post-primary schools in the North Eastern Education and Library Board (NEELB) area could close because of financial pressures.

A document for the North Eastern Education Board, leaked to the Ballymena Guardian suggests cutting secondary schools from 49 down to 20.

However, an education board spokesman stressed the leaked document was a draft. The spokesman said final decisions were up to the minister.

The board wants to ensure schools have at least 500 pupils, are getting good results and are not in debt. Ballymena is most affected by the proposed changes.

A group of local schools suggests closing Cambridge House Grammar and Ballee High, both of which are getting special help to improve.

However, Ballee has not signed up to the proposal and is reported to be planning another solution: a single campus for nursery, primary and secondary pupils.

Meanwhile, the NEELB said it was delighted at the response from schools, but stressed that no decisions had been made.
